Elastic Band Skirt Tutorial

Hello My Pretti’s.

Want to make the easiest skirt ever? Well try an elastic band skirt. Elastic band skirts are basically full skirts made in various fabrics with varying lengths. The waist band of these skirts are actually a piece of elastic ranging in width’s from 2 inches to  as much as 8 inches wide. I love Elastic band skirts because they are quick and easy to make. Depending on the fabric and embellishments they can be very basic or really fancy.

In the following tutorial I will share with you how I make a basic midi length elastic band skirt. The fabric I used is from Joann’s crafts stores. The fabric is a cotton/ poly blend, from the Tutti Frutti collection called “Gone Wild Zebra”, cute name, that’s what I thought too when I brought.

Materials:

1 yard 60in wide fabric

Sewing Machine

Tape measure

Coordinating thread

1yd (or more if needed) 2inch wide elastic

Scissors’

Stick pens

Iron/ ironing board

The first thing you will need to do is measure your waist.

Once you get your waist measurement, cut a piece of elastic the measurement of your waist, i.e., if your waist is 33inches, cut 33 inches of elastic. Overlap the ends of the elastic 1 inch.

Then sew in place in a rectangle, I usually straight stitch it then go over it with a zig zag stitch.

Fold 60 inch fabric in half.

Cut the fabric in half.

You will have 2 halves each 36 inches wide and 30 inches long before sewing.

Put both pieces of fabric together with right sides facing. You will now see the wrong sides of the fabric, using your sewing machine, sew a straight stitch  down both sides, ( down the 30 inches length).

leave the bottom hem with salvage so you can tell which is the bottom. Fold top edge down 1/4 inch towards right side of fabric and press.

Using the sewing machine zig zap stitch around top edge to sew in place.

Now’s its time to attach the elastic band you created.

Overlap the elastic over the top right side edge covering the zig zag sewn edge. Pin in place using stick pins at four points, front, back, left & right side.

Next, use a zig zag stitch on the sewing machine, stretch elastic in each section and sew to fabric, until you have sewn around the entire top and attached the band to the top of the skirt.

Cut the salvage off the lower edge of the skirt. You can do a  straight cut or you can use pinking shears.

Fold up a 1/4 inch at the hemline.

Fold the hem up again and press with iron.

Using the sewing machine finish the hem with a straight or zig zag stitch. Boom, that’s it all done.

Now Rock the skirt.

Hope you have fun creating your elastic band skirts. If you make one, and post it IG please add the hashtag #PrettiModesti, I would love to see your sews. Take care My Pretti’s, until we meet again remember to “Embrace the PrettiModesti in YOU”!
